P.L.2007, c.6 Adds New Divorce Cause for Irreconcilable Differences

January 20, 2007

This bill amends N.J.S.2A:34-2 concerning the causes for divorce. The bill provides that a divorce will be granted on grounds of irreconcilable differences which have caused the breakdown of the marriage for a period of six months and which make it appear that the marriage should be dissolved and that there is no reasonable prospect of reconciliation.

NOTE: The bill does not similarly modify the grounds for termination of domestic partnership or civil unions. However, the Judiciary has interpreted this to apply to civil unions.

Comments

The bill also has a Senate Number - S-1467/A-483 (Scutari/Bateman).

Please, please call your local legislators and urge them to support this bill. It will not make divorce easier - just more humane as people won't have to invent reasons or recount incidents that inflame tempers.

I agree with you, however, I would like to see this bill also modify the reasons for termination of domestic partnerships.
