PA Legislator Introduces GLBT Rights Act
October 21, 2006
HARRISBURG—Rep. Dan Frankel (D) reintroduced legislation that would prohibit several forms of anti-gay discrimination, including employment, housing and credit. The bill, which is similar to the protection provided by the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination, previously failed to win support and remained bottled-up in committee in the previous legislative session.
This time, the bill has 57 sponsors in the Pennsylvania legislature. The Senate version, sponsored by Sen. Joe Conti (R) and Sen. Jim Ferlo (D) has 17 sponsors.
The bill amends the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act, adding sexual orientation and gender identity as protected classifications. The current act provides protections on the basis of race, color, familial status, religiion, ancestry, age, sex, national origin, handicap or disability.
