NJ Supreme Court Decision Available
October 25, 2006
TRENTON—The New Jersey Supreme Court decision in the Lewis v. Harris marriage equality suit was handed down today. Although it was a 4-3 decision, all seven justices held tht it was a violation of the New Jersey Constitution to deny same-sex couples the rights of marriage. However, the Court split on the solution, with 4 justices holding that the legislature must craft a solution within 180 days, without specifying whether the rights must be provided via marriage or another form (such as civil union). The 3 remaining justices held that only marriage would provide equality.
The decision is mirrored here on this site.
I'll have more commentary when I've had a chance to digest the decision.
