Tyrone Garner, RIP
September 12, 2006
HOUSTON—One of our own brave fighters, Tyrone Garner, passed away today. Mr. Garner and John Lawnrence were the defendants who challenged the Texas sodomy laws. The U.S. Supreme Court struck down my former state's law against queer sex, opening up our pathway to freedom.
I never met Mr. Garner, nor Mr. Lawrence, although one of my law professors (and my friend) Mitchell Katine, represented both of them in the initial case, But I will mourn him, as we all should, for being one of those people who I will long honor for his seminal contribution to extending our rights.
Mr. Garner, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you.
