BMW: Mixed Messages on DP Benefits Question

April 5, 2006

PRINCETON—I once again spoke with BMW of North America, which is headquartered here in New Jersey. Their public relations person once again reiterated that they do not currently provide such benefits to its employees.

She did stress that the firm would provide benefits if the employee was in a legally-recognized relationship that was similar to marriage. However, BMW's corporate counsel seems to have taken the position that there is no such legally recognized relationship in New Jersey, which seems to be a misreading of the state of the law in New Jersey.

I told her that I would be more than happy to discuss the Domestic Partnership Act with their corporate counsel and perhaps help clarify any misconceptions about the DPA. I also pointed out that this is, frankly, a potential public relations embarassment for BMW, which is among the minority of auto manufacturers who don't provide DP benefits.

I don't know if there are any domestic partners working for BMW but I'd certainly be interested in speaking with anyone who works for BMW NA and who is wondering why their employer doesn't give their partnership treatment equal to that of a married couple.

I've read about this on some other sites as well, Mr. Hyland. Thank you for the continued, and more specific, update. I find it interesting that they do not offer benefits yet they agressively market to the GLBT community.
