Union County Approves DP Benefits
December 2, 2005
ELIZABETH—The Union County Board of Freeholders unanimously passed a resolution at its December 1 meeting making domestic partners of county employees eligible for health and pension benefits. The county is now the fifth county to do so.
The following is from Joan Hervey of Plainfield Area Equality:
We had a good group of people at the meeting, but when the freeholders went out on executive session for over an hour, many of our people had to leave. A handful of us stayed until the end and had a chance to thank them, both on the podium and in person. Several of the freeholders: Holmes, Mirabella, Estrada and Mapp made eloquent statements in favor of our civil rights. A number of speakers brought up Lt. Laurel Hester, and how gruesome her situation is, and how unfair. Dan Sullivan suggested that when the resolution is made up, it should be sent to the freeholder board in Ocean County!
If you get a minute in the next few days, please contact the Union County Freeholders to thank them and congratulate on their progressive action. Call 908-527-4100, fax to 908-289-4143 or email:
