Monmouth County Votes to Add DP Pension Benefits
December 27, 2005
FREEHOLD-Unlike the freeholders in neighboring Ocean County, the Republican freeholders of Monmouth County showed that the compassionate conservative
label is not an empty slogan when they voted on December 22, 2005 to extend pension benefits to the registered domestic partners of county employees.
By a unanimous vote, the Board of Chosen Freeholders adopted a resolution recognizing registered domestic partners of county employees as eligible dependents for pension purposes. The resolution was limited to pension benefits only, and did not extend health insurance benefits to domestic partners, but it was certainly a welcome start.
Monmouth now joins several other counties that have voted to extend pension and/or health insurance benefits to registered domestic partners, including Bergen, Hudson, Mercer and Union counties. Hopefully, soon, Monmouth County will include health care coverage as well.
