Corzine, Forrester: No Ban but No Marriage
September 21, 2005
TRENTON—In dual, classic displays of political doublespeak, both candidates for governor of New Jersey stated that they would oppose a constitutional amendment to ban marriage-equality. However, both said they were opposed to same-sex marriage. Neither campaign would elaborate further, nor would they say what they would do if the New Jersey Supreme Court allowed such marriages.
Democratic Party Candidate, Jon Corzine made this statement: I believe (that) the fundamental and traditional view of marriage is between a man and a woman. On the other hand, I don't believe constitutions are about taking away rights. That's why I wouldn't have supported an amendment in the federal government and I won't support one in New Jersey.
Republican candidate said:I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman. I believe that a constitutional amendment isn't the right tool to make that defense.
