CA Senate Passes Marriage Equality Bill

September 2, 2005

SACRAMENTO—The California Senate became the first legislative body in the U.S. to voluntarily pass a bill extending equal marriage rights to same-sex couples.

AB 849, which would define marriage as being between two persons rather than a man and a woman, passed the Senate on a 21-15 vote with four abstentions. The bill now proceeds to the Assembly, where it is was narrowly defeated in June. Governor Schwarzenegger has given mixed signals as to whether he would support the bill.

For more, see the story in the San Jose Mercury News.
