MA Marriage Amendment Vote Close
August 29, 2005
BOSTON—The vote on a state constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage but allow civil unions may not get a majority vote at next months's constitutional convention. Several supporters have changed their position and will vote against the amendment. Others are voting against the measure in favor of an initiative backed by Governor Romney to strip same-sex couples of their marriage licenses without providing civil union as an option.
The currently proposed amendment passed the legislature last year and must pass again this year in order for it to be placed on the ballot in 2006. The initiative sponsored by the Governor must garner 66,000 signatures and the support of 51 legislators before it can be placed on the ballot. It must also be demonstrated that it is legal.
